Rising out of the Cottian Alps, Italy's longest river is fed by over 140 tributaries and drains into a basin covering 27,000 square miles. Known as the Val Padana, the plain stretches from Italy's border with France, all the way to the Adriatic Sea. Nearly one third of all Italians live in this fertile expanse, in settlements like Turin (a major manufacturing town) to some of the country's most beautiful and historic towns. Piacenza, Pavia, Cremona, Matova, and Ferrara are some of the special places nourished by "Il grande fiume", the great river.
